ADDICTION

Addiction Services

What is the definition of addiction?

A treatable, chronic disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences.

Prevention efforts and treatment approaches for addiction are generally as successful as those for other chronic diseases.

Types of Addiction

Alcohol Use Disorder

Also called alcohol dependence, alcoholism, alcohol addiction.

Alcohol use disorder can be mild, moderate, or severe, based on the number of symptoms you experience. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Being unable to limit the amount of alcohol you drink

  • Wanting to cut down on how much you drink or making unsuccessful attempts to do so

  • Spending a lot of time drinking, getting alcohol or recovering from alcohol use

  • Feeling an intense craving or urge to drink alcohol

  • Failing to fulfill significant obligations at work, school or home due to repeated alcohol use

  • Continuing to drink alcohol even though you know it's causing physical, social, work or relationship problems

  • Giving up or reducing social and work activities and hobbies to use alcohol

  • Using alcohol in situations where it's not safe, such as when driving or swimming

  • Developing a tolerance to alcohol so you need more to feel its effect or you have a reduced impact from the same amount

  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms — such as nausea, sweating, and shaking — when you don't drink or drinking to avoid these symptoms

Gambling

Below is how casinos manipulate you

  • Casinos give you "free play" and offer to get you in the door

  • They give you free food, free rooms, and more to keep you in the casino

  • There isn't a clock in sight

  • They give you free alcohol

  • The floor is designed in a maze-like layout to keep you in the casino

  • They restrict your views outside

  • They set up slots to be 'near misses' to keep you playing

Tools to help you stop

  • Remove all access to cash

  • Remove yourself from all casino loyalty programs in your area

  • Confide in at least one trusted friend or therapist

  • Self-exclude from your local casinos

  • Start working out, walking, or seeking a new hobby

  • Create a business, no matter how small
